New Book Celebrates 10th Anniversary of the Toronto Music Garden

A beloved public garden is celebrating a milestone: The award-winning Toronto Music Garden is turning 10. To commemorate this occasion, author and landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy is releasing The Toronto Music Garden: Inspired by Bach book, in partnership with the City of Toronto and Margaret and James Fleck, The book is an in-depth guide to the creation of the three-acre public garden with a design based on the “First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello” by J.S. Bach. The garden is the result of a creative collaboration between garden designer Julie Moir Messervy and cellist Yo-Yo Ma to interpret in nature the music of Bach.

The book describes the inner workings of the inspiration, design and execution for this community gathering place. From conception to collaboration, selecting materials to planting, Messervy outlines the design approach, thought process and the creative journey that allowed the concept for the garden to grow and take shape. Gorgeous color photographs and sketch renderings transport readers to the many paths and gathering places along the musical journey.

Readers will enjoy the books’ comprehensive tour of the garden’s six “rooms” – each an interpretation of the traditional dance forms featured in the cello suite’s six movements. Messervy describes the details that allow each room to impart the character of the music, from the orientation of the room within the larger structure of the garden, to the specific plants and materials and how they relate to elements found in the music.
